Philosophy
Quality, creativity and custom are not words typically associated with subdivision developers. But Altmann•Ott Homes is not your typical development company. Altmann•Ott blends nearly 60 years of combined experience from its two partners: Fred Altmann with his expertise in architecture and craftsmanship design, and Dan Ott with his background in large-scale production. The result? Homes that are distinctly different. “To us, aesthetic and architecture is key. We’ve found that it doesn’t cost much more to add unique design elements, color and creativity to every project we build,” says Altmann. “It’s those added touches that make Altmann•Ott Homes different from the other guys.”
Altmann•Ott neighborhoods are styled in the arts and crafts tradition with an added mix of classic elements that set the standard for quality craftsmanship, detailing and amenities. The goal is to help homebuyers find a balance between work and play, home and family.
History
Fred Altmann’s 20+-year tenure in Northern Nevada began when he built the first home in Caughlin Ranch, having since built dozens more custom properties in that community. Examples of Altmann’s style can also be found in some of the Truckee Meadow’s most desirable locations - Montreux, ArrowCreek and Lahontan - many of which have been recognized with Northern Nevada Builder’s Association Banner Awards, including ‘Best of Show’ and ‘Best Custom Home.’
Dan Ott – a fourth generation builder – co-founded his first company in 1976, and from that year until 1989 built more than 3,000 homes in the Sacramento area, plus apartment buildings and commercial structures. In the 1990s he met and partnered with Fred Altmann and applied his skill and knowledge of full-scale subdivision development to Altmann’s experience as a premium builder.
Today the outcome is a blend of custom, craftsman features incorporated into production homes at an affordable price. From Fairway Village at Kiley Ranch, to North Valley Hills (close to town) to Cottonwood Estates in Fernley, Altmann•Ott Homes offers neighborhoods and floor plan choices for a wide variety of buyers.
“Every time we build a new subdivision I envision myself in that community 10 years from now and think: how will it look and feel? Will it still have a contemporary design?” says Altmann. Ott adds, “Our priorities are different from other developers. We are not huge production homebuilders. We focus on quality and a high level of service. We are accessible to our customers and want to hear what they think about our homes.”
To that end, Altmann•Ott Homes has a self-imposed limit on the number of houses they build each year. The company closes on about 250-300 houses annually. “We are striving to be the best in the Northern Nevada market, not the biggest,” says Altmann. “We could build more houses, but quality would be compromised.”
Aside from the creatively designed subdivisions Altmann•Ott Homes builds, the company also designs and builds custom homes, commercial buildings, storage units, apartment complexes and retail space. They have constructed many recognizable landmarks in the Reno area such as the Café de Thai Restaurant, the Caughlin Club, several branches of Comstock Bank and numerous distinct office buildings
Community
Altmann•Ott is a company with strong ties to the Reno community and has a corporate philosophy of giving-back. Dan Ott helped found the Northern Nevada Builders Association Charity and the company donates money from every home they sell to the cause. Ott is also a board member for the Boys and Girls Club of Truckee Meadows. “We’re here for the long run,” says Ott. “We all live here and are raising our families here. So, we want to participate in making this community a better place.”
